Jonas Grätzer – Biography

Jonas Grätzer (1994) is a jazz drummer based in Hamburg, whose musical journey began at the age of six. He took his first steps at the Rheinische
Musikschule in Cologne, where he developed a solid foundation in music.

 

His drumming is shaped by a wide spectrum of influences, from groove pioneers like Jeff Porcaro, Chad Smith, Simon Phillips, and Stewart
Copeland to jazz legends such as Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Brian Blade, Jack DeJohnette, and Dave King. This openness to diverse styles
continues to shape his experimental and genre-crossing approach today.

 

After graduating from high school, Jonas pursued jazz drum studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, learning from renowned
mentors such as Prof. Thomas Alkier and Sperie Karas. Through the Erasmus+ program, his path led him to the prestigious Guildhall School of
Music & Drama in London, where he studied with Ralph Salmins, Trevor Tomkins, and James Maddren. Since October 2024, he has been furthering
his artistic development in the Dr. Langner Jazzmaster program at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre (HfMT).

 

Jonas’ musical work is driven by a deep curiosity for sound, interaction, and freedom. With his band, he explores modern European jazz, infused
with influences from diverse genres—ranging from impressionistic soundscapes to complex, polyrhythmic structures. Playfulness, spontaneous
communication, and the freedom of improvisation are at the core of his music. His band features Will Pethick (trombone), Will R-J (saxophone),
Julian Eingang (bass), and Moritz Schöwing (piano). Special guest Kalle Kalima (guitar) adds a unique dimension to the ensemble.

 

Beyond his artistic projects, Jonas is deeply dedicated to music education. With over 15 years of experience as a drum teacher, he helps
drummers refine their technique, develop their expressive voice, and deepen their musical understanding. His approach focuses on making
complex concepts accessible and practical—always with the goal of nurturing individual strengths and unlocking creative potential.

 

Jonas’ musical journey has taken him to stages across Europe, performing both as a soloist and ensemble member. His work is defined by
technical precision, emotional depth, and a constant quest for new sonic horizons.
